This post is written by Becky Feldman from Too Stupid to Live Podcast.

When I first discovered Orc romance, I was content to stick with Finley Fenn and the gothic world she created with her Orc Sworn series. But this past year, I felt like I owed it to myself to broaden my horizons, and I’m so happy I did. There is so much orc romance out there, and I had a blast discovering authors and the fantastic orcish worlds they’ve created.

What I love about orc romances is the extra layer of taboo in the concept itself. In traditional narratives, orcs felt like nameless underlings of a more powerful evil. Frankly, I always thought of them as elves who came out of the magical, elf-making oven wrong, like an overburnt cookie. Narratives made it seem like the only purpose of an orc was to do the more menial tasks of villainy, the “busy work,” if you will, because the real villain didn’t have time in their schedule.

The idea of making an orc the romantic hero in monster romances is so intriguing and powerful to me as a monster romance reader. I could go into more detail about why, but you came here for recommendations, not an unwarranted dissertation by a podcaster with no master’s degree!

So, if you’re looking to celebrate Octoberfest as Orc-toberfest, here’s a well-rounded list of books that prove orcs can do and be anything.

Orcs Can Rule Kingdoms

Her Orc King by Zoe Ashwood

The Orc King

If you’re curious about arranged marriage orc romances, the Black Bear Clan series is an excellent starting point. Like the main character, this book eases you in to the world of orc culture, showing you just how accepting and pragmatic humanoid monsters can be. Gorvor is a pleasure-positive orc who empowers Dawn while also having enormous amounts of empathy. Dawn isn’t just Gorvor’s human queen. Dawn is THE Queen, and King Gorvor knows when to respect his peers whether it’s a monarchy or a marriage.

Orcs Can be Conscientious Objectors.:

Healing the Orc’s Heart by Lyonne Riley

Healing the Orc's Heart

A common plot point in orc romances is that humans and orcs are constantly at war or, at the very least, ideological odds. Obviously, this exposition helps raise the stakes, but sometimes I forget about that larger backdrop when I’m immersed in a chapter about an elf doing reverse cowgirl on an orc at a sex party thrown by two rich werewolves. That said, Healing the Orc’s Heart does an excellent job of taking the extrinsic strife of the orc-human conflict and having it affect the internal struggles of the actual orc and human we’re following. Even for such a short novella, the worldbuilding is so subtle and comprehensive, which makes the bond between Blizzek and Nera feel so grounded.

Oh, and if you need another reason to read it: the orc can still get an erection even when mortally wounded. What a trooper!

Orcs Can be Women:

I’ve been questioned a lot about the presence of female orcs in orc romances. While many of these series feature memorable female orcs, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have to dig a tad deeper to find a book where the main protagonist is a female orc. But they do exist! (FYI,  Zoe Ashwood is coming out with His Orc Lady in November 2024.)

One book I devoured during my orc-reading marathon was Forged by Magic by Jenna Wolfhart. This book does fall into the cozy fantasy category, but that doesn’t take away from the scorching heat between the enemies-to-lovers protagonists. If you like fast-paced romantasy, this is a fun read.

Let’s take a brief respite from fantasy kingdoms to the quaint monster-filled suburbs of Fairhaven Falls. I recommend “The Single Mom and the Orc” to anyone who loves an adorable grumpy/sunshine contemporary romance. Orcs make for great grumps! Who knew? I don’t actively seek out books with the trope of a brooding man falling head-over-heels for a woman and instantly becoming protective of her “fatherless” baby. However, for some reason, when it’s a brooding ORC, I’m IN! The “orciness” of it all just peppers this narrative so well, and I am here for it.

Orcs Can Come From Space

Heart of an Orc by Cara Wylde

Heart of the Orc

This summer, Cara Wylde became my go-to author when I wanted a monster romance with a premise that leaves you speechless. If you imagine the most unique and outrageous premise for a monster romance, chances are Cara Wylde has already written it. “Heart of an Orc” is a fast read that eliminates grim elements of an inter-species love story and replaces it with delicious, frothy joy. Love wins in this book. And the reader does, too.

Orcs Can Detect Your B.S.

The Duchess and the Orc by Finley Fenn

Obviously, I had to include a Finley Fenn romance on this list, so I thought I’d gush (pun intended) about my favorite one. The Duchess and the Orc delivers a gutsy depiction of mental health with the character of Maria. Diagnosed as “hysterical” in the human world, never once is Maria victimized by this sexist epithet in the plot. Yes, the label affects her emotionally, but she’s still a fully fleshed out character who feels, overthinks, makes mistakes, and cracks jokes. Her mate – Simon the Enforcer – is an inspiration. Seriously. If a fictional orc can destigmatize women’s mental health within a page, maybe the real world can catch up.

Orcs Can be Involved in Organized Crime

Orc Boss by Lark Green

The Orc Boss

Or dare I say, “Orc-anized Crime”? If you want a mob boss with a heart of gold and a sultry Scottish accent, Orc Boss may be a book to add to your TBR list. This book has your standard mafia romance tropes — mistaken identity, kidnapping for the right reasons, forced proximity. It adds a few tusks and pointy-eared faes to mix… because why not?

Perusing the Amazon reviews, a few readers were torn about the female main character for being obsessed over her ex. I actually found this part of her character extremely relatable. Heartbreak is a profound human experience after all… even when it’s fae.

Orcs Can Survive Post-Apocalyptic Dystopias

Orc Bought by Emma Alisyn

Orc Bought

When I mentioned memorable female orcs earlier, this was mainly referring to the side characters in Orc Bought. In this book, Defne, a human who will do anything to save her daughter Elif, auctions herself off as a bride to orc Commander Uther Bachbracht. While we follow the power balance between Uther and Defne, what is so fascinating is the female orc community Defne encounters. Worldbuilding is unique in The Immortal Sorting, which explores what high fantasy looks like after humanity’s downfall. I’m excited to continue this series!

Orcs Can be Your Fake Boyfriend

Orc Me Baby One More Time by Ava Ross

Need a last-minute plus-one for your grandmother’s birthday? Don’t worry. If you live in Monsterville, Gunner is a game. I recommend this novella if you can’t get enough of the high-stakes romance about a fake relationship to appease Grandma. (Seriously, what is up with Grandma these days?) Highlights of Orc Me Baby One More Time include the mythology of orcs in this world – you become one by drinking a magical brew. This segues to another highlight, which is Gunner’s internal character journey. We definitely feel Gunner’s insecurities in his new orc body. You just want to give him a hug and tell him he’s perfect, kind of like Simon would for Maria in The Duchess and the Orc! However, one thing Gunner can be secure about is the steamy scenes. Gunner definitely knows what he’s doing there. If your hormones are in need of a pick-me-up, you’ll love the parts where the orc… orcs.

Orcs Can Vacation at Nudist Resorts

Girls Weekend – C.M. Nacosta

Girls Weekend

This book is available on Kindle Unlimited. Don’t have KU? Check your Best KU Subscription Offer.

C. M. Nacosta’s Girls Weekend is a captivating series. While the first book’s premise is about three single elf females looking for action at an orc nudist resort, it is so much more than that. It’s an exquisite adult coming-of-age story about three women forging their own paths when their original expectations of life and love aren’t what they imagined. It just happens to include sexually adventurous orcs as part of their journey. I think this book is essential reading for anyone trying to carve out a place for themselves in this day and age.  I also think it’s essential reading for anyone who’s curious about an elf being double-penetrated by two pharma-bro orcs in public.
