Melissa Weisner’s Writing Journey
Unlike many authors, Melissa didn’t dream of writing from a young age. She started writing in her 30s after a career in mental health, social work, and public health. Melissa candidly admits that writing was never on her bucket list, but she turned to it in 2016 as a creative outlet during a stressful time in her life.
At the time, the 2016 U.S. presidential election was in full swing, and like many, Melissa found herself overwhelmed by the constant flow of news. She began writing while her kids were asleep, seeking a healthier way to spend her evenings. What started as a hobby quickly grew into something more, and within a few years, Melissa had several published books under her belt.
From Creative Hobbies to Storytelling
Before discovering her passion for writing, Melissa dabbled in other creative outlets like painting and drawing. Writing felt like a natural extension of her creativity, even though it was a new medium. As she explains in the interview, it took a while for her even to tell her husband about her writing projects, unsure of whether she’d finish them or whether they’d amount to anything. With seven published books and her eighth coming soon, Melissa has fully embraced her life as an author.
The Inspiration Behind Wish I Were Here
Melissa’s latest book, Wish I Were Here, was inspired by a real-life story about a woman in France who lost her identity due to a court mishap. In the real-world case, the woman was declared dead by mistake, leaving her unable to access her bank accounts or use her social security number. While the real story was tragic, Melissa saw the potential for a fictional version focused on reinvention and romance.
In Wish I Were Here, the protagonist, Catherine, is a math professor who wakes up one day to discover that she no longer exists in the eyes of the government. Her social security number doesn’t work, her bank accounts are closed, and she has no official identity record. With the help of her charismatic doorman, Luca, and his large, loving Italian family, Catherine embarks on a journey to reclaim her identity—and maybe find love along the way.
Exploring Magical Realism in Melissa’s Work
Melissa’s writing often incorporates elements of magical realism, a subgenre she’s particularly drawn to. This blend of ordinary life with a touch of magic allows her characters to experience personal transformation in unexpected ways. In Wish I Were Here, the protagonist’s loss of identity forces her to reevaluate her life and take a closer look at who she really is.
Melissa’s interest in magical realism began with her previous novel, The Second Chance Year, in which the protagonist is given the chance to relive an entire year and correct her past mistakes. This theme of second chances and fate is something Melissa continues to explore in her latest works.
Audiobooks: A Game-Changer in Melissa’s Reading Life
Audiobooks have become an essential part of Melissa’s reading routine, especially as life gets busier. She admits that she didn’t start listening to audiobooks until about a year ago, but now they’re a staple in her life. Whether she’s walking, driving, or folding laundry, Melissa is always listening to her next favorite book. She loves the convenience and speed of audiobooks, often listening at 2x or 2.1x speed to keep up with her busy schedule.
