on May 30th 2017
From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.
Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley's team decides it's time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he's settled down.
Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of "normal." Under ordinary circumstances she'd never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn't have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley's team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley's a shallow, self-centered jerk? It's not like they're going to fall for each other in real life…right?
This is a book review of When it’s Real by Erin Watt.
I am a huge fan of Erin Watt’s Royal series. When I read Paper Princess I was hooked. It was one of those books that I couldn’t put down
I hate to say this but When it’s Real is no comparison to Paper Princess. I found the book slow and a bit watered down in comparison to Paper Princess. It felt like it was Disneyfied the book to make it a Young Adult Contemporary as opposed to New Adult.
When it’s real is a rock start romance between Oakley Ford and Vaughn Bennett. Oakley needs an image makeover so his manager found Vaughn as the perfect person to play fake girlfriend to Oakley. They start a bit hate to love relationship. But over time, they realized that they were not faking a relationship. They fall in love. Oakley’s manager and publicist interfere and breaks them up but their love is stronger and they get back together and live happily ever after.
This book had the right tropes of enemy to loves, fake relationship, and rockstar romance. There is no cliffhanger in the end of the story. I just wished it was more addicting like Paper Princess series.
I know this book is published through a publisher while Paper Princess is a self-published book. I think the authors had more freedom to get steamier in Paper Princess in comparison to When it’s real.
If you are looking for a fun, contemporary read then I encourage you to check this book out.
